Do You Remember: When Julia Roberts Married Lyle Lovett

When you’re America’s sweetheart, you’re destined to have your love life obsessed over. Julia Roberts may be the most sweetheart-y of that image, the absolute epitome of what it means to be a wide-smiled, effortlessly charming, and magnetic woman on-screen who is both aspirational and relatable. The Girl Next Door with hair to die for. In the early ‘90s, nobody could beat Roberts at her own game, between back-to-back Oscar nominations, a slew of box office successes, and paydays that far outearned most of her contemporaries. But Roberts also faced a stormy phase during her most visible period as a Grade-A movie-star, and it largely happened because of her love life.

Roberts dated a lot of hot dudes. In 1991, she infamously ditched fiancé Kiefer Sutherland right before their wedding and ran off with his best pal Jason Patric. She briefly dated Matthew Perry, Liam Neeson, and Dylan McDermott. Later in the decade, she’d take Benjamin Bratt to the Oscars (and even guest-star alongside him on Law & Order.) She’s been with her current husband, cinematographer Daniel Moder, for well over 20 years now, with relatively little drama aside from that t-shirt before they wed. He’s husband number two. Because before him, there was a legendary figure of the country music scene who, from the outside, seemed to be the antithesis of what the world expected from Mr. Julia Roberts.
