I devoured From Here to the Great Unknown, the memoir of Lisa Marie Presley (completed by her daughter Riley Keough) in one sitting. It was a fascinating and deeply tragic read that offered a raw and painful glimpse into the life of an oft-documented but seldom understood public figure. Being the only child of Elvis was always going to make Lisa Marie's life interesting, to put it mildly. The portrait the late singer offers of her life is one of endless grief and the ways that it shaped everything that followed her father's death. Having additional context offered by Keough only increased the heartache, as the daughter left behind acted as a voice of clarity and hindsight.

It's tough to fully judge the book as an insight into Presley's life since she was never able to finish it before she died in 2023 at the age of 54. Celebrity memoirs are best understood as personal narratives in the face of obsession and cynicism. How do you try to reclaim your own story after decades of other people dictating it? Certainly, Presley talking about her adoration of her erratic and troubled father reads as the confessions of a woman who has never gotten over his death or ever been able to view him as a mere mortal. But there were details I was admittedly eager to know more about. Specifically, I wanted to hear her talk about her marriage to Michael Jackson. How did the king of pop end up proposing to the daughter of the king of rock and roll?
