Thank you for this essay Kayleigh. I can always count on you for a sane take on celebrity reporting.

The New York Post headline was absolutely disgusting, as was the Wall Street Journal's: "Trump Criticizes Rob Reiner After His Death." Yes, "criticizes". That's an accurate statement. Trump calmly and rationally criticized the man who had been dead less than 24 hours, murdered alongside his wife by his own son. How positively infuriating. I almost blew a gasket when I saw that.

Rob Reiner brought me so much joy throughout my entire life, going back to when I was 9 years old and saw The Princess Bride for the first time. I thought it was a perfect movie back then and all these years later, I still think it's a perfect movie. I've seen Stand by Me more times than I can count. I adored When Harry Met Sally, and I don't even typically like romantic comedies. Mr. Reiner was a brilliant filmmaker, an extraordinarily likeable screen presence, and his work positively radiated decency, joy, and love for humanity. I'm going to try very hard to focus on those aspects of his legacy, and try to forget about the ugliness I've seen over the last couple of days.

It was disconcerting to see both TMZ and the New York Post’s horrifying coverage getting pushed when their content is not anything I would ever click on but the algorithm thought I needed to see the excessively detailed headlines just in case. It also made me think of the loss of Phil Hartman - getting this much information about somebody who only brought joy to my life is a curse.
