Katie Holmes Calls Out Fake Story About Her and Tom Cruise for the First Time Ever?

This year, Suri Cruise turned 18 years old. Aside from that being an eternal reminder that we’re all getting older and time spares nobody, it also means that Katie Holmes’ daughter is legally an adult. So, if you were wondering why there was a sudden increase in paparazzi photos of her, that’s why. The photographers are so deeply ethical and non-creepy like that. While what Suri and Holmes face now in terms of media attention is nowhere near as intense as it was when she was a child and Tom Cruise was still in the picture, it’s probably going to continue for the rest of their lives. She is the kid of the most famous movie-star of his era, after all, even if he’s not a present father.
Katie has worked hard to maintain a sense of normalcy for her small family. Her escape from Scientology’s clutches is the stuff of legend, after she got her lawyer father to help her mount the perfect heist to file for divorce without risking losing her child to the cult that loves to alienate parents from their offspring. Since then, however, she’s never mentioned Cruise. I assume there are some intense NDAs in place but also just a desire to keep the peace and not have her life forever defined by this dude. Press stories about Tom, Katie and Suri have been a constant over the years but nothing that ever felt that tangible. Vague sources talking about Tom’s love for his daughter never rang true when we could all see that he hadn’t spent a day with her since the split. He chose Xenu.
But now that Suri is 18, it seems like things might be changing. Holmes took to Instagram to call out a story from the Daily Mail that claimed Suri was receiving a massive trust fund from her dad. Nope, not true, says Katie. It wasn’t a lengthy rebuttal or even a main post on her account. It was just a Story. She just said it and moved on.
But still, this is a huge deal in gossip world. All these years of silence then a very casual f*ck you to Scientology’s finest son? She’s letting the world know a few things at once: Tom has nothing to do with his own child, he’s not financially supporting her in her adulthood, and Suri is not in any way benefitting from his wealth or clout. Yeah, Suri’s going to be fine since Katie isn’t hurting for money, but there’s a huge difference between Dawson’s Creek money and Mission: Impossible money.
While performing in a recent school play, Suri’s surname was listed as Noelle, not Cruise. It seems like she’s making some sound decisions about her future and how much she doesn’t want to be connected to her absentee father. He made his choices. He’s worked overtime to clean up his reputation after he started to get too weird with his Scientology preaching. He’s never distanced himself from that cult and its abuses. He just doesn’t scream about them from the couch. Everyone fell in line too. People love the Mission: Impossible films (in fairness, I enjoy them too) and he has a good industry-wide reputation among his peers. He’s maintained a Nice Guy image through the fire, rain, and thetans. It’s certainly been enough to stop people from digging into the obvious fact that his ex-wife ran away to avoid losing her kid and he’s now acting as though they never existed.
I don’t expect Holmes to start talking endlessly about Cruise now. Frankly, I don’t think she wants that kind of hassle in her life. She’s her own person, one who’s got a solid career and managed to hide a five-year romance with Jamie Foxx from the media because she felt like it. As much as we want that tell-all memoir, I doubt it’ll happen. Still, this little glimpse into one of 21st-century gossip’s biggest mysteries was revealing.
People Can’t Be Normal About a Celebrity Breakup: Barry Keoghan Edition
(Image via YouTube // Warner Bros.)
Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter were together for well over a year. She cast him in the music video for her song “Please Please Please”, about not wanting to be embarrassed by your crappy boyfriend. According to sources talking to People, the pair have now split up, and rumours that Keoghan cheated on her have sprung up. And then things got out of hand. Keoghan ended up deleting his Instagram page, then he tweeted a statement asking people to not only leave him alone but his family, who have experienced a lot of harassment and abuse in recent times.
