Happy new year, everyone! I hope you all had a good holiday break and that 2025 has gotten off to a solid start for you. I no longer have the cold and am back on my non-festive routine, which is just as well because we’re now head-first into awards season.
The Golden Globes Giveth and the Golden Globes Taketh Away
The Golden Globes do not matter. Let’s just get that out of the way. They’re a crooked organisation made somehow all the more corrupt by their takeover by Penske Media, creating a level of vertical integration within the industry press that is beyond parodic. Despite all their promises of big change, they’re still just a star-f*cker party that occasionally makes intriguing choices with who they award their silly statuettes. They’re also not good as predicators for the Oscars, which is the entire reason they get so much attention. So, let’s just accept that this is all very silly and not to put too much weight on their winners from last Sunday. But we can still gossip!
The big winner for the night was, alas, Emilia Pérez. It's a bad film. My review goes into more detail on why I disliked it so much but I also have to note that I'm truly baffled by why anyone else likes it. Usually, every awards season has one movie whose appeal totally eludes me but I understand its popularity. Emilia Pérez? Nope, I don't get it. It's badly made, morally repugnant, most of the acting is subpar, and the songs are forgettable. But while I'm not alone in my assertion that this film is bad, I am apparently in the minority, so I'm just preparing for the worst. It won Best Film (Musical or Comedy) over a packed category and Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress.
But the other big winner of the night was extremely un-Perez, and that was The Brutalist, which won three awards, including Best Drama and Best Director for Brady Corbet. It's a very long and uncommercial film so I’m a bit surprised that it won over something like Conclave, which feels like the platonic ideal of an awards title and consensus pick. I haven’t seen it yet because of UK release dates but I’m excited. It’s also fascinating to see Adrien Brody picking up awards for it. His post-Oscar win career has been largely spotty and this is one of the meatiest roles he’s had in decades. Does this mean he no longer has to take paycheque movies to pay off the castle? Does Georgina “former Mrs. Harvey Weinstein” Chapman get to stay in the castle? So many questions.
If there was any win of the night I truly loved, it was for Demi Moore. How amazing that The Substance is an awards darling. How baffling that this is the first real award Moore has received for acting. What a wonderful speech too. Wouldn't it be amazing if she won Best Actress for a body horror satire about how Hollywood sucks? Honestly, I think she has a good chance at taking home the Oscar. Best Actress remains a very crowded field but she has the momentum, the narrative, and the campaign strength. Plus it’s just a blast of a movie that’s resonated with people well outside of the horror niche.
The TV wins were more predictable, with Shōgun and Baby Reindeer winning big. Shout out to Colin Farrell for winning for The Penguin. Really, aside from the Emilia Pérez of it all, these are not terrible picks. They had some fun surprises, like Sebastian Stan winning for A Different Man and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres beating the likes of Angelina, Nicole, and Tilda with I'm Still Here. If the Golden Globes is to continue existing, trying to make fetch happen, I’d rather they revel in their unseriousness and have fun with their picks. Don’t go for the obvious ones. Celebrate stuff that probably won’t get to the Oscars shortlists. Let everyone get drunk while looking glamorous. Let’s just keep it calm until the season gets more heated and I inevitably have to restrain myself from tweeting up a storm about how much Emilia Pérez sucks. Seriously guys, it’s so bad.
Kylie and Timothee Show Up at the Golden Globes Together; The Internet is Dumb About It
Timothee Chalamet was nominated for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. In a very thin year for the Best Actor category, his Oscar nod feels reasonably sure (although don’t rule out Sebastian Stan grinding hard to get into that fifth slot instead.) He showed up looking like a stylish theatre kid f*ckboi and had fun with his colleagues. He was also sat alongside his girlfriend Kylie Jenner. They looked cute together. She took photos of him. She hung out with Elle Fanning. It seemed nice.
The internet cannot act normal about this couple. The usual crap unfolded: claims that it’s a fake romance, insults about Jenner’s worth and intelligence, claims she’s not good or smart enough for Timmy, and so on. The Chalamet subreddit is full of some of the most horrid things I’ve seen online in a long time, with these so-called fans (they’re not) wishing ill upon her children and claiming she somehow ruined Chalamet. Dear lord, I hate this crap.
